You're excited to start your Invisalign treatment and finally get the perfect smile you always wanted. But, while you read about how to make the treatment most effective, you find out that it's not recommended to drink coffee while using your Invisalign. Is that true? Do you have to give up your delicious morning potion in exchange for a Hollywood-picture smile?
Here's what you need to know.
Invisalign trays are designed to move your teeth into their correct position. But, for this to happen, you need to wear the trays for at least 22 hours a day, with only brief periods of removal for eating, brushing and flossing. While coffee may not seem like a particularly harmful substance, it can actually stain and discolor your Invisalign trays if left in contact with them for extended periods of time.
In addition to staining, coffee can also affect the fit of your Invisalign trays. The heat and acidity of coffee can soften the plastic material of the trays, causing them to become misshapen and less effective in correcting your misalignment or malocclusion. This can lengthen your treatment time and compromise the final results of your treatment.
While all this may sound like bad news, you can still enjoy your coffee during your Invisalign treatment. However, you need to take certain precautions and develop new habits.
Remove Your Trays Before Drinking Your Coffee
This is the most obvious solution, and it's also the most effective way to protect your trays from staining and damage. Simply remove your trays before drinking coffee, and be sure to brush and floss your teeth before putting them back on.
Switch to Iced Coffee
The lower temperature of iced coffee won't affect the fit of your trays as much as hot coffee, and it's also less likely to stain them.
Drink Your Coffee Using a Straw
Another option is to use a straw when drinking coffee. This way, you can minimize the contact between the coffee and your teeth. Just be sure to remove the trays before sipping and rinse your mouth with water afterward.
It's crucial to remove your Invisalign trays before drinking coffee to prevent staining and damage to the trays.
